On December 4th, 2018, the Jacob Javits Convention Center was presented with a check from NuEnergen Energy Management and Consulting for more than $500,000. The check represents their largest-ever Demand Response earnings thanks to their summer 2018 participation. Demand Response is a program run by the utility and power grid to balance energy supply and demand and helps protect against unplanned power outages. Clients get paid for curtailment participation when the grid is stressed and at risk of failure.
Summer 2018 was particularly warm, with high electrical demands for cooling purposes. On multiple occasions, the Javits Center enacted their facility curtailment plan, specifically designed for the facility by NuEnergen. The convention center was also able to track their performance by way of a Real-time Meter, all of which were key parts of the program success this year. The Javits Center currently participates in a total of 3 Demand Response programs, including those run by both the New York State power grid operator (NYISO) and those by the local utility, Con Edison. This is a major increase in participation compared to their single enrollment launch in 2014. Relative to that summer, this past December’s payment was over 7x greater.
NuEnergen Director, Government Accounts, Brett Wu said: “The presentation of the summer 2018 Demand Response check to the CEO and sustainability team of the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center is a poignant example of the success driven by the long-time partnership and cooperation between the Client and NuEnergen. In addition to this being the convention center’s largest-ever Demand Response earning, combined with other incentives and audit returns recouped this year by way of NuEnergen’s services, the Javits Center has earned over $1 million in program benefits and rebates this year alone.”
